We are so pleased to welcome Andrew Godby, Software Engineer, to the team. You can learn more about Andrew below.
Tell us about yourself. Where are you from?
I was born and raised in Ohio! Specifically, Galion (Crawford County). I now live in Las Vegas.
Where did you go to school?
I went to High School at Colonel Crawford in North Robinson, Ohio.
How did you get into software engineering? What areas of your field do you like to focus on?
My career started years ago in Mansfield, Ohio. I got a job working as a junior WordPress web designer with a local marketing agency. I quickly learned that I enjoyed working in code.
The fields I like to focus on are full-stack focused. I enjoy working with backend more, but learning anything new is enjoyable for me.
Do you have a code of ethics or a mantra that you live by when doing your work?
Yes, several. I take privacy and security very seriously. I also try to avoid building anything that goes against my personal values. I’ve had individuals in the past who have come to me to build apps that do not align with my personal values, and I’ve walked away from the deals because of that. My motto is basically to follow my gut instinct. If something does not feel right, I speak up. I feel that it is my responsibility to help maintain the security and privacy of all of the people that use the applications I build, or help facilitate building.
How do our core values (collaboration, initiative, ingenuity) align with your own?
All three of these values align with my own very well. I believe that working with my peers to achieve goals is critical, because I don’t know what I don’t know. I can always learn something new, and staying humble helps me a great deal. Initiative and ingenuity are aligned with me because they respect the golden rule. I always try to deliver the best quality products as I possibly can, and taking the initiative to ensure things meet and exceed expectations is so important to me.
What do you want to learn in the next 12 months as a software engineer? What do you want to learn about the web development industry?
Aside from refining my skills in various technologies, I would really like to learn more about DevOps and working with other engineers. In my previous role, I was a bit isolated as a standalone developer.
If you were a time traveler and could visit any time in history, where would you go and why?
I would easily choose to go back to about 1995, and talk to a much younger version of myself. I would convince myself to start learning programming now and try to avoid some of the mistakes I made along the way. And If I’m able to, I would like to take about 5000 CD’s packed full of source code and data from the future to help myself along the way! Is this cheating? Hah!
What is the one thing most people don’t know about you?
When I’m super happy, I like to bust out my sweet dance moves around the house. I only let my fianceé, Ria, see them. When I say they are sweet, I mean they are equal to a 7th grader at a spring dance, but she seems to enjoy them and gets a laugh at the same time.
We are always up for connecting with individuals to talk about working at Buckeye Interactive. If you think you’d be a good fit, please take a look at our careers page and reach out!
